Status Report 13 June 2005

Summary

Reports are being submitted and will be summarized on Tuesday. If you just submitted a report, it will be at the bottom of this page.

Individual Reports

(Jenny) Guilian Wang

Completed tasks / bugs fixed

  • Modified the view generation algorithm to take care of compositor nodes in schema trees.
  • Had a meeting with Yannis Katsis working on source registration for community-based data integration, identified aspects that are overlapping (GUI for manual matching and mapping representation) and complementary (our tool can be a plugin mapping suggestion module in their tool), and compared our different mapping representations, actually very similar except that we cover local multiple-to-1 involving functions. Collaborations will be discussed in the followup meeting between our lab and the database lab.
  • Figured out how to avoid deadlock for detecting whether Quilt exception happens when a subprocess runs Kweelt for data translation.

Current tasks / bugs

  • Check the view generation algorithm in SCIA feature by feature.
  • Write SCIA documentation, then make it available along with the code.
  • Update SCIA GUI with functionalities for handling schemas with recursive references.
  • Modify the OWL importer that imports only sub-class relationships, to support more including recursive references.
  • Modify the algorithm for propagating the effect of user feedback to subtree nodes during context check.

Completed tasks / bugs fixed

  • Discussed work plans and applications within SEEK and beyond with Raja and Joseph.
  • Had a meeting with Rami, a new postdoc at SDSC with Mark Miller, whose PhD thesis was about schema matching using description, mapping expression model and contextual ontologies for EDI (Electronic Data Interchange). SCIA may combine his matching algorithm with existing ones, it would be very interesting to compare his mapping expression model and contexts with ours. We agree to explore concrete collaborations in followup meetings, he may continue to pursue schema mapping with us together, and with Prof. Joseph Goguen as his academic advisor.
  • Discussed collaborations with Database group people who work on source registration, Prof. Yannis, PhD student Yannis and master student Dipti, they'd like to use SCIA as the schema matching module in their community-based data integration system.

Current tasks / bugs

  • Check the view generation algorithm in SCIA feature by feature.
  • Write SCIA documentation.
  • Update SCIA GUI with functionalities for handling schemas with recursive references.
  • Modify the algorithm for propagating the effect of user feedback to subtree nodes during context check.
  • Prepare for moving into the new CSE building.

Laura Downey

Completed tasks / bugs fixed

  • Presented proposed Kepler visual and information re-design at Estes Park and gathered feedback
  • Presented concept relating basic prototype at Estes Park
  • Presented results of task analysis and paper prototyping with Kate Jones (concept relating tool) at Estes Park
  • Created and posted Kepler usability wiki page.
  • Created and posted Kepler proposed symbology wiki page and gathered feedback.
  • Entered all UI and usability bugs into bugzilla from task list and notes from Estes Park meeting.

Current tasks / bugs

  • working on next iteration of proposed kepler symbology to be presented at Santa Barbara dev meeting.
  • working on various UI mockups to support proposed re-design and ontology features
