Use Case 1

Use Case 1: Assign Status To Concept

Actors

Primary Actor
"anyone" (individuals, institutions, parties, etc.) intending to label concepts already existing in the SEEK Taxon database as "valid" or "invalid" according to their current perspective on their statuses.

Description

The idea is that status assignments - "valid/invalid" with a corresponding start/stop date and author (the Primary Actor) - sit on top of the existing concepts. So multiple parties can add their preferred sets of status assignments and store them in the SEEK Taxon database, without directly affecting the concepts.

Flow of Events

Pre-conditions

  • SEEK Taxon database has sets of concepts stored and available for "overlaying" status assignments.

Basic Flow

  1. The Primary Actor is registered with SEEK to assign statuses.
  2. An interface is available to select those existing concepts to which statuses will be assigned.
  3. The status assignment interface includes categories like "status", "reference" (e.g. Primary Actor), "start", "stop", etc. Ideally the Primary Actor indicates whether a particular assignment is taken from a taxonomic reference or made up "instantly".

Examples

None (yet).

Post-conditions

Other users can view and query concepts with party-specific statuses attached to them. Meanwhile, statuses can be edited by the Primary Actor in subsequent interactions with the SEEK Taxon database.

Alternative Flows

  • The Primary Actor may choose to accept a certain unique intersection of existing status assignments en bloc: "in order to see my preferred perspective, accept ITIS 2003 statuses for North American mosses, and GBIF-Germany statuses for Central European mosses, and reject Species 2000 statuses for mosses"

Further Details

The implication is that statuses can not only be part of a standard concept transfer schema, but also added and edited separate from it.

Non-functional Requirements

None (yet).

Issues

Statuses are important to many users and can limit the amount of information returned in their queries of the SEEK Taxon database.
