Use Case 15

Use Case 15: Assign GUID To Taxonomic Concept Information (Provisional)

Actors

Primary Actor
SEEK, assigning GUIDs to various elements of the concept schema (names, references, etc.) as they are newly acquired by the SEEK Taxon database.

Description

Unlike names or references in isolation, GUIDs can be unique, unambiguous, and permanent "keys" to taxonomic concepts. Their real value will be exposed when they serve as vehicles for communication about concepts across many taxonomic databases. Queries may eventually run through GUIDs (!), not traditional names. What exactly should receive a GUID, and how this information can be managed for the long term, is still unclear.

Flow of Events

Pre-conditions

  • SEEK Taxon database stores taxonomic concepts.

Basic Flow

Not specified (yet), though see CVS document by Dave Thau at http://cvs.ecoinformatics.org/cvs/cvsweb.cgi/seek/projects/taxon/docs/guid/. Some prototype services mentioned in these documents are on-line.

Examples

None (yet).

Post-conditions

GUIDs become primary "keys" to access taxonomic concepts.

Alternative Flows

  • None.

Further Details

See above (documents by Dave Thau in CVS).

Non-functional Requirements

None (yet).

Issues

See above.

History

29 March 2004
(NMF) Use Case created - provisionally! - in response to discussion at KU SEEK Taxon meeting on March 18-19, 2004.
