It can be visualized as a knowledge or concept map and is useful in reasoning about the relationships among concepts and among data that pertains to those concepts. The [Knowledge Representation Working Group|KnowledgeRepresentationWorkingGroup] is building foundational ontologies for biodiversity and ecological applications, and is trying to create a framework under which these ontologies can be extended.
