An ontology is a formal specification of a set of concepts and their interrelationships. It can be visualized as a knowledge or concept map and is useful in reasoning about the relationships among concepts and among data that pertains to those concepts. The Knowledge Representation Working Group is building foundational ontologies for biodiversity and ecological applications, and is trying to create a framework under which these ontologies can be extended.
More information on the current status of the Eco Ontologies can be found in the Eco-Ontology Working Manual.
