Taxon WG Conference Call_15 Dec 2004

Progress Update:

  • Thau:
    • LSID server for metacat
    • generalized for SRB & DiGIR
    • XSLT tool for DiGIR to GML

  • Nico:
    • Visualization tool document on wiki
    • Identified taxonomist for bats, Kay Jones from Columbia University
    • Manuscript with Jessie et al

  • Bob:
    • capturing plant concepts
    • will certainly send data in TCS format to KU by beginning of January

  • Jessie:
    • mammals database
    • tool to map b/w databases and TCS - mapforce inadequate, Robert will write something, example generation is tedious
    • trying to keep Linnean core group from recreating complexity of TCS
    • Martin will come to Feb meeting and work with Xianhua on GUI Tools

  • Susan:
    • working with Joana on conceptual search of literature
    • Joana will update 4 OWL representations of TCS, then send to SMS and Taxon

News

  • Trevor is leaving Napier mid Feb 2005 to work with Dolly the cloned sheep
  • Dave Thau is working normally to end of year, then maybe 10 hrs/wk til end of March. Then off for cool trip and grad school.
  • Joana may go on leave-of-absence soon

Visualization Tool document discussion SeekTaxonTools

  • 1 interactive help/tutorial
  • 2,10 - import (export from user perspective) from database to TCS - Trevor/Robert looking at this, 10 is a visual display of 2.
  • 3,4,5 Martin (3 and 5 web based, 4 desktop app)
  • 6 - comment on existing Taxon Cache contents
  • 7 - business rules - LSID assigning authority looks at rules for assignment - we come up with rules and implement a java class (part of #2, 5)
  • 8,9 Morpho/EML/concepts - both automated and manual, function of SMS/Kepler?

  • Has anyone modeled rules of nomenclature? Not that we know of.

  • Jim: First talk to users, have structured interviews (either local people or phone interviews), then report back and scope

  • Mammals of North America
    • MSW data - new version done, but they are reluctant to release until book is published
    • Dave Thau will download relevant data from MaNIS for Napier - order = bat

February meeting

  • Discuss structured interview for users of GUI tools with Laura Downie
  • Bring some users to meeting
