Status Report 14 March 2005

Summary

Reports are being submitted and will be summarized on Tuesday. If you just submitted a report, it will be at the bottom of this page.

Individual Reports

Aimee Stewart

Completed tasks / bugs fixed

  • Integrated Hibernate database abstraction into database query package with tests
  • Attended SEEK Taxon meeting in Santa Barbara
  • Attending SEEK KR/SMS/Beam meeting in Davis to discuss integration with Taxon
  • Additional modifications to the object model to simplify

Current tasks / bugs

  • Integrating database abstraction into database modification package
  • Create a roadmap of tasks for KR SMS/Taxon collaboration leading up to May meeting
  • Add mammals data to Taxon cache
  • Add HSQLDB database creation to Ant build process
  • Improve parser with java library (XQuark?) and add support for multiple TCS versions

"Jenny" Guilian Wang

Completed tasks / bugs fixed

  • In the past weeks, I have been preparing for the departmental thesis proposal on schema mapping for data transformation and integration, finally I finished it under great help from Prof.Goguen and Bertram and also support from SEEk
    • wrote a literature review about schema mapping (including schema matching and view generation) semantics, algorithms and systems
    • wrote an introduction chapter, covering schema mapping problem definition, applications, challenges, state of art, our goals and an overview of our work
    • gave a presentation to thesis committee

Current tasks / bugs

  • develop principles for schema mapping user interfaces
  • improve the algorithm for generating view definition from interschema correspondences
    • compare Clio's algorithm with ours
    • study the Chase algorithm for nested relational model
    • understand the limitations of our view generation algorithm
    • find critical points for view generation
  • try to get a draft for DILS with Prof.Goguen et al
  • look for more interesting use cases
  • fix bugs

Serguei Krivov

Completed tasks / bugs fixed

  • Finished paper on Knowledge Maps and GrOWL-Query, submitted to DILS05

Current tasks / bugs

  • Setting up UI for filters
  • Working on the bugs in Jena version

Significant issues

  • I have filters that may show only class definitions, class instances, class instances with values, class relations, all subclasses, all superclasses. What other views on ontology we may possibly need?

Nico Franz

Completed tasks / bugs fixed

  • Attended UC Davis meeting; gave a presentation on "taxonomic resolution" in ecological workflows; talked to Deana and Mark about SEEK Taxon's expectation and strategy regarding the mammal use case.

Current tasks / bugs

  • Involved in organizing the pre-Estes Park meeting on April 26-27 with Laura, Deana, our mammal expert(s) and SEEK Taxon.
  • Starting to revisit plans for publications, will spend some time writing this week.

Significant issues

  • I feel that the mammal use case is our best chance to both design tools in a timely manner (which is of great concern to some) and do it in a professional, user-friendly way (which is of concern to others). If that position were accepted throughout the group then we might achieve more synergism.
